Ecosible prides itself on its strict adherence to the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. While we can’t directly influence how you reduce, Ecosible can however help you reuse and recycle. In the rapidly evolving technological world, companies are bound to be burdened with redundant electronic machines. Most of these idle machines lying with you could have a second life if you choose to send them to Ecosible for reuse and resale. Needless to say that before any cell phones, tablets, or laptops are refurbished or resold, Ecosible completely destroys all sensitive client data during the refurbishment process. Components and devices that do not pass our strict internal quality control standards, are automatically recycled. All recycled items undergo a complete segregation and are organized by these main fractions – Mild Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Circuit Boards and Plastics. Plastics are further sorted by type, main types being – ABS plastics, Polycarbonate plastics, ABS/PC alloy, High impact polystyrene [HIPS] and nylon. These are then granulated and sold to manufacturers that blend post-consumer material with virgin material for a variety of applications.
All recyclable materials like circuit boards, are exported back to smelters who recover approximately 16 different precious metals for use in manufacturing. As per our zero landfill policy, all byproducts of our processes are disposed in an environmentally conscious manner that follows all state and global regulations. When you choose Ecosible you can be rest assured that all your waste management needs will be fulfilled by a team of professionals who follow all data security measures while only leaving the tiniest carbon footprint.
Plastics the Sordid Story
We have all been privy to images flashed on the media depicting the cruel fate of marine life entangled in discarded fishing nets, or caught within plastic packaging. For so many of us the sight of plastic drink bottles or bags floating in our local lake or river is a common thing. However, the real problem with plastic pollution in the world’s waters – the fact that it never decomposes – is an insidious feature of most modern waste disposal systems. To the majority of people, the hazards of plastic remain invisible. However, the plastics problem is more pressing than anyone could possibly conceive.
As we started to build our plastic disposal model Ecosible very quickly realized that we had to learn to segregate the plastics even further. Majority of the sorting of plastics in India are done by women and children under the most unsafe and unhygienic conditions. We were not able to find a mechanical unit that can separate the different grades of plastic. So it just boiled down to us segregating further to separate the different types of engineered plastics – Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate PC to name just a few. There are a multitude types of plastics that one can get from e-Waste. The problem with plastic can be explained by their molecular structure. Most of the plastics produced are carbon-based petroleum products, and have the capability to absorb a variety of organic compounds from pesticides and other chemicals used in manufacturing, to used oil from cars. All the harmful waste that washes into oceans due to improper disposal, binds to the plastics which further aggravates ecological problems, and eventually end up in our food chain. Whether those pollutants consumed by fish end up in our bodies has yet to be established by scientific studies, but most experts agree that traces of these chemicals can be found in our bodies.
Enterprises Can Help
Many experts argue that industries have the potential to alleviate the crisis in a big way, and the first visible step in reducing waste should be carried out by enterprises. The simplest step is to work with organizations like Ecosible that are fully compliant to environmental regulations, and aware of the larger problem at hand. We know that we cannot change every stakeholder’s approach, but we can educate and provide the necessary oversight. So, whether you are looking for post-consumer material for manufacturing or you are recycling your office’s plastic tea cups [which our employees fervently practice], your organization is taking the first crucial steps in recognizing and solving this terrible malaise. Work with Ecosible to streamline your organizations’ plastics recycling process, while contributing to the overall solution of the problem with plastics.
To comply with our zero waste policy our SOP for our granulator room include that when the operators sweep the room, they take care to sieve the dirt out for any plastics. In the words of Gandhiji, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. We wouldn’t be doing our part, if we didn’t institute such policies and practiced it.
To say that safety practices form the spine of our activities at Ecosbile, is merely an understatement. We have made sure that we inculcate safety from bottom-up in all our processes. We have been extremely conscious of the small details; right from the steel toed shoes to the other personal protection equipment (PPE) we make available for our employees down to shoulder belts. Every shop-floor operator is trained in CPR and First Aid.
To ward off any potential ergonomic problems due to repeated actions, we provide anti-vibration gloves to our employees engaged in cutting routines. The ground up plastics we generate are by design packaged in 20 Kg sacks to avoid the international threshold of 23 Kgs. While we are not yet at a 5 Sigma level, our operator stations are designed to minimize them walking around, have a container for everything they can possibly generate when they segregate, something we call segregation at source. Be it providing anti-fatigue mats for employees or a container for the screws they can possibly see by type, we take pride in trying to do things as efficiently as we can.
